About SAKK Safety, LLC.

Hello, my name is Steve McDonough, the inventor of the SAKK® MAT. I have witnessed many changes in relation to safety over the past thirty-four years that I have spent in the construction industry.  My involvement in the industry has included new construction, remodeling projects, maintenance, and repair service work.

All four phases of the above work types may require getting on to a roof, and in particular a flat roof with a parapet wall.  A parapet wall is a perimeter wall that usually extends approximately 18 inches to 30 inches higher than the finished elevation of the flat roof.

Ironically, the method of getting on to a flat parapet style roof today is exactly the same as it was thirty-four years ago when I started in the construction field of work.  Access to a parapet roof is accomplished by the use of an extension ladder.  In the past, once set in place to climb up to the roof, the extension ladder was often not even tied down in any way, shape or form.  If it was tied down, is was either tied with a bungee cord or screws were installed on the sheet metal cap over the parapet wall and wires or ropes were used to secure the ladder in place.  Not all weather conditions, especially in the northern half of our nation, can make this an easy task.   The greatest danger encountered when getting on to the roof from the extension ladder is the possibility of falling when stepping onto the sheet metal cap, especially during inclement weather, such as rainy or freezing conditions.

In order to make a safe entry and exit from a roof, an alternate method needed to be created to tie down and secure the ladder. A non-slip material over the parapet wall was also necessary to allow the user to have a safe place to step onto the metal cap.

With that being said, the SAKK® MAT was created. The SAKK® MAT is a construction and building maintenance safety device used to access a flat (parapet style) roof. It solves the two problems listed above by giving users a safer method to secure the extension ladder in place, as well as providing a non-slip surface that reduces the possibility of injuries or even fatalities from falls off of extension ladders.
